My Music Journey

It all began on my 9th birthday when I reached the age I could start piano. To celebrate, I had a piano themed birthday cake - a delicious way to start my musical journey! I soon found though, that like the ingredients of that cake tasted great all together, but making it isn’t easy, learning piano takes a lot of work and effort.

The end result though, is beautiful just like a delicious cake. As time went on, I saw the sweet result of my labour as I learned to accompany  church singing, play duets, and just sit down and read through extra music for fun.

It wasn’t always easy, but looking back I can say it's worth it. Now, I carry with me a passion and love for the piano that spills over into my teaching and instruction every week.

My Vision

I desire to help my students add all the ingredients and mix them together right from the start rather than seeing them all as separate elements. Piano is not divided up into theory, scales, and pieces. These elements are all interconnected, which is why I include theory games and other activities like memory pieces, composing, transposing, and improvising in my lessons. I aim to show my students how all the piano ingredients work together so they can see the amazing results of learning piano for themselves. (It’s much more fulfilling than eating birthday cake!)

I love seeing children learn and grow and mature and put their skills into action. My goal is to help them be confident players who use their skills to share beautiful music with others.

Qualifications

After starting piano lessons at age nine, I continued on to complete 7th Grade in the AMEB piano exam system as well as 5th grade in music theory. I've been working with children in a variety of settings for almost a decade and have five years experience teaching piano. As a music teacher, I continue to learn and grow by engaging in regular professional development that keeps me inspired to teach creatively and with passion.
